Clarity for Communities: Rotary E-Club of Baobab’s Visionary Impact in Limpopo
In the heart of South Africa’s Limpopo Province, the Rotary E-Club of Baobab orchestrated a transformative health initiative, focusing on providing clear vision for underserved communities. Responding to an invitation from the Rotary club of Ignacio District 5150 in California, USA, and with additional support from local sponsors, the club secured 820 free eyeglasses for distribution to those in need.
Among the local sponsors, Polokwane Odyssey Optical Laboratory contributed 23 pairs of lenses, Salmon Schoeman sponsored specialized low vision eye tests and spectacles, Mpho Ramasobane & Joseph Choma Optometrist donated frames, and Dr. Lebogang Selahla offered free counselling to learners. This collaborative effort ensured a comprehensive approach to addressing the vision needs of the community.
Led by Moithumi Mashiane, a dedicated professional optometrist, the Rotary E-Club of Baobab eagerly embraced the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of community members. On November 8th, Sekuruwe witnessed the initial impact, with most of the 250 pupils at Sekuruwe Combined School undergoing vision screenings. Approximately 20% were identified for further testing, emphasizing the urgent need for vision correction. Despite the overwhelming response from elderly community members, Moithumi and the club managed to distribute 21 pairs of glasses, pledging to return in early January to fulfil their commitment.
Continuing their mission on November 10th in Ga-Mashishi, the team encountered an even greater need for vision care across all age groups. Moithumi, realizing the documented high incidence of impaired vision in the area, temporarily closed her practice every Friday until after December 1st, 2023. During this period, she dispensed an impressive 268 eyeglasses, referred numerous patients for special intervention, and acknowledged the ongoing need for their services.
Poor vision poses significant barriers to various aspects of life, and the intervention provided by the Rotary EClub of Baobab empowers community members to overcome these challenges. Moithumi, a dedicated professional optometrist, stresses the importance of maintaining professionalism but candidly admits there were moments when even she became emotional. The joy expressed by patients, especially when a young learner exclaimed, “It is a miracle. I can see!” underscored the profound impact of their efforts.
The success of this vision-focused outreach, made possible by the collaborative efforts of local sponsors and the Rotary E-Club of Baobab, has inspired the club to contemplate extending the service in 2024. Plans include more frequent visits to Sekuruwe, Ga-Mashishi, and other communities, offering a range of services and involving additional healthcare practitioners. This holistic approach aims to address the comprehensive health needs of these communities, fostering a brighter and healthier future for all involved. The recent health days were indeed an eye-opener, setting the stage for continued impactful initiatives in the years to come.
